Chelsea goalkeeper Cech to be rested for Liverpool trip

Tuesday 08 May 2012

Chelsea will take a team without goalkeeper Petr Cech to play Liverpool in their penultimate Premier League fixture of the season after interim manager Roberto Di Matteo decided to rest the Czech Republic international, the Daily Mail has reported.

Cech played in Saturday’s FA Cup final between the two sides and was at the centre of controversy after Andy Carroll’s second-half header came close to crossing the line before Cech pawed the ball to safety. But the goalkeeper will not get the chance to resume battle with Carroll as the Mail reports he will be left in London. Portuguese goalkeeper Hilario is expected to deputise, with Ross Turnbull on the bench.

The newspaper adds that Cech is likely to be one of a number of changes to the Chelsea team but also that Di Matteo has not given up hope of chasing down fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur. If Chelsea are to catch Spurs they have to win at Anfield, as with two games to go Chelsea are five points adrift of Harry Redknapp’s side.
