Manchester United join Arsenal and Tottenham in Vertonghen chase
Manchester United have joined Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in the battle to sign Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen, the Daily Mail has reported. Newcastle United and Chelsea are also said to be interested in the Belgium international.
Vertonghen has just captained Ajax to the title in the Netherlands but with only a year left on his contract after this summer, could be available for around £8m, according to the Mail.
The player himself has already admitted that he has been in contact with Tottenham but Arsenal can offer Vertonghen the chance to play with international colleague and former Ajax teammate Thomas Vermaelen. Of the three clubs, however - Arsenal, Spurs and United - as it stands only United can guarantee Vertonghen Champions League football, and one of or possibly both the Gunners and Tottenham could yet miss out on the competition. Arsenal are currently in third with Spurs fourth but that could all change in the last round of league fixtures next weekend, while if Chelsea win the Champions League, fourth place will no longer be enough to qualify for next year’s tournament.
