Mata demands Chelsea keep fighting for top-four Premier League finish

Tuesday 08 May 2012

Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata has refused to give up on finishing in the top four of the Premier League this season - and has called on his teammates to take the same attitude to Anfield when the Blues play Liverpool on Tuesday evening the Independent has reported.

If Chelsea are to catch fourth-place Tottenham Hotspur then they must defeat Liverpool and win their final game of the season at home to relegated Blackburn Rovers, meanwhile hoping that both Spurs and Newcastle United slip up in their fixtures, at home to Fulham and away at Everton respectively.

Should Chelsea not confirm a top-four finish then Roberto Di Matteo’s side would have to beat Bayern Munich in Bayern’s own Allianz Arena in the Champions League final to guarantee participation in next year’s tournament. Should Chelsea manage to do so then fourth place in the Premier League would no longer be worth a Champions League place - instead the fourth-place team at the end of the season would drop into the Europa League.

Mata , who played in Chelsea’s FA Cup final win on Saturday over the same opposition, said: “We have to win [against Liverpool] and still believe in playing the Champions League next year.
