Liverpool vs Chelsea - Match preview and team news
Just three days after Chelsea defeated Liverpool at Wembley to lift the FA Cup trophy, the two sides meet again on Tuesday night in what will be another hard fought game that neither manager can afford to lose, for very different reasons.
Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has overseen what has turned out to be a disappointing campaign, despite Carling Cup victory and Saturday’s cup final appearance. The Reds currently sit in 9th position in the Premier League, four points behind Merseyside rivals Everton in 7th. Following a run of three defeats in four games, Kenny needs a result to relieve some pressure and improve his chances of being in charge next term.
Chelsea on the other hand went eleven games unbeaten when Roberto Di Matteo took over the reigns from Andre Villas-Boas in March, guiding them to the Champions League final and FA Cup victory, but their last league clash ended in home defeat at the hands of Newcastle. Three points are vital for Di Matteo to keep within contention for the Champions League spots, sitting as they currently do some five points behind Spurs, with a game in hand.
Chelsea are set to start with Branislav Ivanovic and John Terry in central defence due to injuries to Gary Cahill and David Luiz. Fernando Torres is set to replace Didier Drogba up front, after scoring four goals in his last three appearances.
For Liverpool, Luis Suarez should be partnerd by Andy Carroll in attack, with Craig Bellamy set to be benched. From the side that lost at the weekend, Dirk Kuyt should come in to the side, replacing Jay Spearing.
