Arsenal to miss out to Tottenham on Vertonghen signing
Arsenal look likely to be disappointed in their pursuit of Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen as the defender has spoken of how excited he will be to play for Tottenham Hotspur, the Metro has reported.
Arsene Wenger has been chasing Vertonghen for some time and hoped to make an early triple swoop in the transfer market, with the arrival of Germany striker Lukas Podolski already confirmed and France midfielder Yann M’Vila expected to follow close behind. Vertonghen would have been the third part of the trifecta but Harry Redknapp appears to have beaten his Arsenal counterpart to the punch after Vertonghen spoke of Tottenham with increasing certainty.
Vertonghen said: “Tottenham is a fantastic traditional club who play football in a way I like. Ajax was the perfect club for me, but Spurs will be very close in nearing that already. They buy young, eager and offensive-minded players.”
The Belgium international has just led Ajax to their second-consecutive Dutch league title and 31st overall. The 25-year-old made 31 league appearances as Ajax retained the championship by virtue of a six-point margin from second-place Feyenoord, with PSV Eindhoven a point further back in third.
