Chelsea boss Di Matteo unsure if Luiz and Cahill will return in time for Champions League final

Wednesday 09 May 2012

Roberto Di Matteo has admitted that Chelsea centre-back pair David Luiz and Gary Cahill may not be fit in time to play in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich on May 19, Sporting Life has reported.

Both Luiz and Cahill are suffering from hamstring injuries. The Brazilian suffered his injury in the FA Cup semi-final win over Tottenham Hotspur while Cahill’s injury occurred later, in the Champions League semi-final second-leg against Barcelona. The match in the Nou Camp proved to be an attritional one for Chelsea, with not only Cahill picking up his injury but Branislav Ivanovic receiving a yellow card that rules him out of the final and John Terry seeing a straight red to leave the captain facing the same fate.

The injuries and suspensions mean Di Matteo could go into the match with Bayern without any senior central defenders. Ivanovic and Terry are both definitely out of the fixture through suspension so if fit, Cahill and Luiz will have to partner each other. If only one of them makes it in time they will be forced to form a makeshift defence. Di Matteo said: “We are working towards their [Luiz and Cahill] fitness and trying to get them back as soon as we can, but I can't put an exact date on it.
