Manchester United chase Everton defender Baines but face competition from Bayern Munich

Manchester United hope to sign Everton and England left-back Leighton Baines this summer as Sir Alex Ferguson looks for both competition and an eventual replacement for captain Patrice Evra, the Daily Mirror has reported, adding that United face competition for the defender from Champions League finalists Bayern Munich.

Baines, 27, is four years young than Evra and the Mirror had previously reported Ferguson hoped to snatch the former Wigan Athletic player for a cut-price £5m, with the newspaper now conceding it would take closer to £15m to tempt Everton into parting with a two-time Players’ Player of the Year and the current Everton Player of the Year, as voted for by the club’s supporters.

Bayern, meanwhile, are believed to be in the market for an attack-minded left-back and have been linked with Baines in the past, but Everton manager David Moyes will be loath to let leave one of the key players in his side, the Mirror notes.
