Drogba likely to leave Chelsea this summer

Thursday 10 May 2012

Didier Drogba is expected to leave Chelsea this summer after the club declined to offer the striker the two-year contract extension he was holding out for, the Daily Mail has reported. A one-year deal was offered to the Ivory Coast international but Drogba turned it down.

The Mail adds that there is a belief amongst the Chelsea hierarchy that lately Drogba only performs in the biggest games, letting his standards slip in fixtures that have less riding on them. Drogba, 34, scored what proved to be the winning goal in Saturday’s FA Cup final victory over Liverpool as well as finding the net against Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final of the same competition and netted the only goal of the Champions League semi-final first-leg against Barcelona.

As it stands the last match of Drogba’s Chelsea career, which began in 2004 after a big-money move from Marseille, would be the Champions League final against Bayern Munich on May 19.
