Chelsea defender Luiz could play against Blackburn in bid to prove fitness for Champions League final

David Luiz could make his return from injury in Chelsea’s final game of the Premier League season against Blackburn Rovers on Sunday as the Brazilian defender strives to prove his fitness for the Champions League final against Bayern Munich, the Guardian has reported.

Luiz injured his hamstring against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final on April 15 and has not played since. But with interim Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo facing the prospect of being without all of his senior centre-backs for the Champions League final - John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic are suspended and Gary Cahill is also suffering with a hamstring injury - the pressure is on Luiz to return to action.

The Guardian notes that Luiz has been able to push himself as far as jogging through training but has not been deemed ready to play competitively yet. However, Di Matteo is keen to give Luiz every chance to play against Bayern in Bayern’s own Allianz Arena, and the 25-year-old may start against Blackburn on the bench with a view to an appearance later in the contest.
