Arsenal target Giroud in Bayern Munich talks

Thursday 10 May 2012

Arsene Wenger’s hopes of bringing Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud to Arsenal appear to have been dealt a blow after it was revealed that Giroud’s agent has been in talks with Champions League finalists Bayern Munich, the Daily Mail has reported.

Giroud has been valued by the owner of Montpellier, Louis Nicollin - described by the Mail as “eccentric” - at £50m after firing the side from the south of France to the top of Ligue 1. Giroud has scored 21 goals this season and Montpellier lead the table by three points with two games to play, and have oil money-fuelled Paris Saint-Germain hot on their heels.

The Mail puts the likely fee for Giroud at closer to £15m than £50m but confirm that Giroud is likely to leave Montpellier this summer. Arsenal appeared to be in competition with Liverpool for the striker’s signature but Giroud himself has revealed his representative has spoken with Bayern Munich. He said: “I personally had no talks with Bayern Munich, but my agent has.
