Man Utd ponder move for Everton man Baines
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is contemplating making a £10m move for Everton and England left-back Leighton Baines, The Daily Mail reports.
Doubts have emerged over the form of current United left-back Patrice Evra and Baines has enjoyed a superb season for the Toffees, seeing interest from Champions League finalists Bayern Munich. Evra has been captain all season whilst club skipper Nemanja Vidic has been injured, but the 31 year old could leave to make way for Baines.
The 27 year old Everton defender is not likely to come to Old Trafford as Evra’s understudy and could force the Frenchman away from the club this summer. Ferguson had hoped a bid of £6m would be enough, but is being forced to pay higher for one of David Moyes’ prized assets. United will hope that their good relationship with Everton, after the signing of Wayne Rooney and the plethora of former Red Devil players at Goodison Park, could swing the scales towards their favour for Baines’ signature.
United’s main competition comes from Munich with Bayern manager Jupp Heynckes desperate to fill the gap at left-back, where the German side currently deploy midfielder David Alaba. If Baines did make the move to the Allianz Arena, he would be the second Lancastrian at the club and join former Tranmere forward Dale Jennings at the club.
