Chelsea in the hunt for Ajax defender van der Wiel

Friday 11 May 2012

Chelsea face competition from clubs across Europe in their pursuit of £20m-rated Ajax defender Gregory van der Wiel, the Daily Mail has reported. The newspaper adds that Bayern Munich, Chelsea’s Champions League final opponents, are one of the sides interested in the 24-year-old.

A right-back, van der Wiel was reportedly close to a move to either Chelsea or Bayern in January until both sides baulked at the price tag. Now Italian side Roma and La Liga champions Real Madrid have entered the race for the right-back as Ajax’s asking price has dropped as his contract gets closer to expiring.

The Mail notes that right-back is a position Chelsea are likely to look to strengthen this summer as Paulo Ferreira will leave the club after eight years’ service and the future of Jose Bosingwa is also in question. That would leave only Branislav Ivanovic, the Serbian who also often plays at centre-back.
