Koscielny reveals the moment Arsenal lost faith in Wenger

Friday 11 May 2012

Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny has revealed in an interview that the Gunners squad lost faith in manager Arsene Wenger as well as each other after what the defender describes as a “catastrophic” start to the Premier League season, ESPN has reported.

After an 8-2 hammering by Manchester United at Old Trafford Arsenal were languishing in 17th in the early league table and as late as February 1 were seventh, three places adrift of qualifying for next year’s Champions League. A strong run of spring form took Arsenal back into top-four contention and with a game left to play Wenger’s side are third, in pole position to reach next year’s Champions League. A win on Sunday at West Bromwich Albion would be enough to guarantee qualification.

Koscielny however pointed to that August humiliation against the champions as a result that induced much soul searching at the Emirates Stadium. The France international said: “The start to the season was catastrophic…Then there was the thrashing at Old Trafford. The whole world buried us…after that you start to doubt your own qualities, the club, the coach and everything else. We needed to sort that out.
