Andy Carroll will be a success at Liverpool if he is given time to develop, insists former Reds director of football Damien Comolli, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

Comolli was speaking with talkSPORT and is quoted by the Echo as saying Carroll is at least three years away from his peak. Comolli added: “All the stats prove that strikers, especially target strikers, peak when they are 26. He’s 23. He’s got so much more to come, it’s incredible. I don’t see why he shouldn’t be a success.

The former Newcastle United striker was bought by Liverpool in January 2011 for £35m, while Comolli was employed as director of football, a position he left last month with the Echo reporting Comolli bore the brunt of the frustration of the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, for a series of transfers that have so far yielded disappointing results. Comolli was previously employed by Tottenham Hotspur and had a spell with Spurs’ North London C

Carroll has scored nine goals in his first full season at Anfield, having played in 47 games. Carroll’s last goal came in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea, and the England international could have had a second in the same game only for the officials to judge the ball did not cross the line before Petr Cech palmed it away.
