Arsenal boss Wenger blames the economy for quiet summer ahead
The parlous economic situation across much of Europe has led Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to predict the summer transfer window will see little movement, least of all in the Premier League where the 25-man squad rule will also have an effect, the Guardian has reported.
Wenger pointed to the economic downturn as reason for many clubs to shy away from big-money transfers, citing his own club specifically as one who should expect a quiet summer. Wenger also added that Arsenal are faced with a squad of 34 when all the players are fit and available, and with Premier League regulations insisting only 25 players over a certain age can be registered to play throughout the season, the manager is faced with having nine players watching from the stands if they are not sold on.
He added: “I feel we will have a very quiet summer on the transfer market because there is a huge crisis that is hitting Europe, and that there will be very little movement. In England it will be quiet because of the 25-man squad rule and, if you cannot move the players out, you cannot buy.
Arsenal have already confirmed the signing of Germany forward Lukas Podolski and had been strongly linked with a move for France midfielder Yann M’Vila, but Wenger this week rejected the notion that a move for M’Vila was in the offing. Instead, Wenger pointed to the return of Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby as ways in which the Gunners could strengthen for next season.
