Arsenal boss Wenger a fan of the Europa League

Saturday 12 May 2012

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed he is an admirer of the Europa League, praising the competition for the quality of the football on show, the Independent has reported.

The Gunners face dropping into the Europa League if they lose their final Premier League game of the season against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Sunday and the results of Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United go against them. Spurs are at home to Fulham while Newcastle face a trip to Everton.

Wenger stressed that he wants to qualify for the Champions League but refused to denigrate the secondary competition, declining to agree with the comments of Tottenham left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto, who previously described the Europa League as “useless”, according to the newspaper. “The Europa League final [between Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao] was a fantastic game to watch, much better than many Champions League games,” Wenger said, adding: “What’s a useless competition for you? For me a good competition is when you see two good teams play a good game…but of course, you want to be in the Champions League.

The future of Robin van Persie may rest on whether Arsenal are in the Champions League or the Europa League, Wenger agreed, but insisted that even if the Gunners captain does not agree a new contract this summer then it was not a foregone conclusion he would leave.
