Liverpool sack Kenny Dalglish
After a disappointing league campaign at Anfield, Liverpool have decided to sack manager Kenny Dalglish, BBC Sport reports.
The decision to axe the Scot came after Dalglish flew out to Boston for face-to-face showdown talks with owners John W. Henry and Tom Werner. Liverpool may have won the Carling Cup and reached the final of the FA Cup, but Fenway Sports Group, who own the club, were unhappy with the league performance this season. The 61 year old has subsequently paid the price and a statement issued by FSG insists that the club are looking to replace Dalglish immediately.
The statement read: “After a careful and deliberate review of the season, the club came to the decision that a change was appropriate. It is not a decision that was reached lightly or hastily. The search for a new manager will begin immediately.”
Early reports have earmarked former boss Rafael Benitez and Wigan manager Roberto Martinez as favourites for the job, which Dalglish returned to originally on a caretaker basis in January 2011. The Scotsman has seen controversy this season with the Luis Suarez affair and the way in which he spoke about the racism row, something Dalglish has later admitted that he played wrong.
Dalglish’s departure follows the decision to dismiss director of football Damien Comolli and head of sport medicine Peter Brukner back in April. The former Liverpool player also released a statement about the dismissal, in which he thanked the way the matter was conducted in a ‘honourable, respectful and dignified way’.
