Babayaro confident of Chelsea defence

Former Chelsea left-back Celestine Babayaro has told A Different League he believes that Roberto di Matteo’s backline have the capabilities to stop Bayern Munich’s attack in Saturday’s Champions League Final.

The 33 year old made 132 appearances for the Blues in an eight year spell at Stamford Bridge and made his fair share of European performances. Chelsea are struggling defensively with suspensions to John Terry and Branislav Ivanovic from the semi-final against Barcelona. Di Matteo is hopeful that Gary Cahill and David Luiz will recover from their injuries, which should be a possibility, and Babayaro insists that the Blues can cope with the threats of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery.

“From my point of view, I think Chelsea has the defence to stop anybody. They are finalists, which says it all. They played Barcelona in the semi-final and no-one gave them a chance. Tactically, I think they are gonna shock the world. They will play with their normal system. I think if Chelsea stick to their style and try to play on the counter, they could beat anybody”, Babayaro said.

Di Matteo has the chance of capping an unbelievable season for the Blues with victory in both the FA Cup and the Champions League. Babayaro has been impressed with the way the Italian has stabilised the club and believes that he should be made full-time boss

Babayaro stated: “I believe that Roberto has done well for Chelsea. The team have been rejuvenated, they win games, the fans are happy and hopefully he will get the job on a permanent basis.”

Babayaro was talking at a Google+ Hangout at the UEFA Champions Festival in Munich.
