Friday 18 May 2012

Former FFC Frankfurt star Steffi Jones has told A Different League of her happiness at how big a part social media is playing in the expansion of women’s football.

Jones participated in the first ever UEFA Hangout, in which she took questions from various people across the world over webcam at the Champions League festival in Munich. The 39 year old retired from the game in 2007 and now works as an ambassador for UEFA, as well as organising events such as the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany.

That particular event received a lot of worldwide coverage and had great success on social networking sites Twitter and Facebook. Jones is delighted with how interactive the women’s game has become and being part of events such as the hangout, which allow the game to be promoted. The former German international defender insisted that the promotion on Twitter is a positive aspect and UEFA are looking to continuously discuss the women’s game to attract new fans.

“Since that World Cup, women’s football has gained a lot of followers. It is very important to keep on developing that and having highlights like this Champions League festival to show the world again that there is good women’s football coming up. There is a great chance for us to show through social media and we’re trying to keep up with that, just like our players”, Jones stated.

Jones was talking at a Google+ Hangout at the UEFA Champions Festival in Munich.
