Liverpool to speak with Villas-Boas but not Benitez

Saturday 19 May 2012

Liverpool will speak with former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas over the club’s vacant managerial position but not former manager Rafael Benitez, the Guardian has reported.

Kenny Dalglish was sacked by Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group earlier this week and the process of selecting a new boss has already taken in many contenders, with Roberto Martinez, currently of Wigan Athletic, already given position to discuss the post, while Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp, of Swansea City and Borussia Dortmund respectively, rejected the opportunity.

Villas-Boas is expected to be interviewed in the near future but former manager Benitez, who left the club in 2010, may only be considered for a return if more rejections from other targets are forthcoming. The Guardian notes that there are doubts among the Liverpool hierarchy that Benitez would be willing or able to work within the infrastructure they are imposing at the club after the level of control he held in his previous tenure. That is despite Benitez working under a similar system at both Valencia and Inter.
