Di Matteo quiet on Chelsea future
Chelsea manager Roberto di Matteo has still yet to comment on his long-term future at Stamford Bridge, despite guiding the Blues to their first ever Champions League victory, BBC Sport reports.
The Italian’s final game as interim boss ended dramatically as Chelsea beat Bayern Munich 4-3 on penalties after the game ended 1-1. Di Matteo has brought the FA Cup and now the most coveted prize for owner Roman Abramovich since he replaced Andre Villas-Boas in February. There had been reports that former England boss Fabio Capello could make the move to Chelsea, but those have been quelled by Di Matteo’s countryman himself.
Chelsea captain John Terry and goalkeeper Petr Cech have publicly backed their manager, but Di Matteo has refused to discuss whether his short stint in charge at Stamford Bridge will lead to a permanent role. The Italian has also accepted that whatever the future brings, he will respect the decision of Abramovich, who warmly embraced the Chelsea manager as he strode up the steps to collect the trophy.
The Italian said: “My future is not important. Whatever the club decides, I will respect. You know that what we discuss with the boss, we don’t discuss publicly. It is irrelevant, because, as I have said in the last three months, I have been happy with the arrangement and whatever the future holds, I will accept.”
