McManaman plays down big names to Liverpool

Sunday 20 May 2012

Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman has told the Reds that their days of attracting world-class managers are long gone and they should become more realistic, The Daily Mail reports.

Liverpool owner John W. Henry took the decision to sack Kenny Dalglish after a poor run of league form left the club with an eighth-place finish. Rumours have linked former boss Rafa Benitez with a return, but one of the standout favourites is Wigan boss Roberto Martinez who has been given permission to talk to Reds chief executives by his chairman Dave Whelan.

McManaman believes that a manager such as Martinez is probably the extent of Liverpool’s appeal and they would not be able to attract world-class bosses such as Pep Guardiola and Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho. Liverpool attempted to attract fan appeal by posting a message on their Twitter account to see who the fans would want to replace Dalglish and McManaman insists that some of the supporters are not living in the deal world.

“You can’t identify Pep Guardiola and go get him, you can’t identify Jose Mourinho. Those days of that type of appointment have long gone. It’s unrealistic, isn’t it? Of course, we’d like Pep or we’d like Jose Mourinho, but we’re living in the real world. I don’t know who’s available, who’s willing to come”, the 40 year old said.
