Gourlay hails 'phenomenal' change at Chelsea

Sunday 20 May 2012

Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay has heaped praise on the effects that interim manager Roberto di Matteo has had on the Chelsea squad since Andre Villas-Boas’ dismissal, Yahoo Sport reports.

Di Matteo’s transformation of the Blues was completed on Saturday night, as Chelsea’s penalty shoot-out victory over Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena brought their first Champions League trophy. The Italian has also won the FA Cup with the club this season and Gourlay is delighted at how quickly Di Matteo has managed to change spirits within the dressing room. However, the chief executive stated that the managerial position will be reviewed and Di Matteo has a great chance.

Gourlay said: “We’ve seen a phenomenal change and a run of results which finished last night with winning the Champions League. There’s a number of things we’ve got to look at and we’ll review where we are and take it from there, but it’s a phenomenal turnaround really.”

Didier Drogba has been a pivotal figure for the Blues this season, scoring the winning penalty against Bayern as well as the equaliser which sent the game to extra-time, and Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has stated that the club will look to open talks on a new deal with the 34 year old. The Ivorian international has been campaigning for a two year deal, whereas the club want to just offer a one year contract to the striker, but Buck is ready to open discussions and thinks Gourlay will sit down with Drogba’s agent to try and work out a deal for Drogba to stay.
