Shevchenko set for coaching return to Chelsea

Tuesday 22 May 2012

Andrei Shevchenko will make a surprising return to Chelsea as part of the backroom team in Roman Abramovich’s new vision for the club, the Daily Mail has reported. The Ukrainian striker played for the Stamford Bridge side between 2006 and 2009 after a £30m transfer from Milan.

The newspaper adds that the appointment will be made as soon as Shevchenko decides to end his playing days, and that the 35-year-old is already undertaking his coaching badges. This summer’s Euro 2012 tournament, in which Shevchenko will captain co-hosts Ukraine, could prove to be the player’s swansong after a career that has thus far taken in more than 100 international appearances.

During his time as a player at Chelsea Shevchenko made 77 appearances, scoring 22 goals. Previously with Milan, Shevchenko won the Ballon d’Or in 2004. The Mail notes that Shevchenko still has a home in Surrey, a legacy of his Chelsea days, and has told friends he expects to return to Chelsea as a coach when he retires.
