Lukaku with something to prove on Chelsea pre-season tour

Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku will have to make a good impression on the club’s tour of the United States this summer or find his career with the Champions League winners at the beginning of its end, the Guardian has reported.

Lukaku joined Chelsea from Anderlecht last summer but failed to make an impact at Stamford Bridge, starting only four matches, appearing in just 12 overall and not scoring a single goal. Chelsea had paid £18m for the player who the Guardian claim was one of Europe’s most wanted transfer targets a year ago. The newspaper adds that if Lukaku does not impress the new Chelsea manager when the club tour the United States in July he will be allowed to leave on loan.

The Guardian also notes that Lukaku, 19, has criticised for Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas for the way in which he treated him, claiming he was only of use to the Portuguese to make up the numbers in training. Lukaku however is reportedly open to the idea of a loan move away from the club.
