Aurelio leaves Liverpool for Brazil return

Friday 25 May 2012

Liverpool have released Brazilian full-back Fabio Aurelio after six years at Anfield, with the 32-year-old set to return to football in his native country after agreeing terms with Gremio, the Daily Mail has reported.

Aurelio joined Liverpool from Valencia in 2006, signed by Rafael Benitez who had previously worked with the left-back at the Spanish club. Injuries limited Aurelio’s playing time and the defender was originally allowed to leave at the end of the 2009-10 season, only for newly-installed manager Roy Hodgson, who had replaced Benitez, to re-sign the player.

However, Aurelio’s injury problems returned and he made only three appearances, two of them in Premier League, in the season just ended, and a total of 134 in his entire Liverpool career. Aurelio joins Gremio on a contract extending until December 2013.

The highlight of Aurelio’s Liverpool tenure was arguably his goal against Manchester United in a 4-1 victory at Old Trafford. Aurelio converted a free-kick with 15 minutes remaining to wrap up the resounding triumph.
