Di Matteo in dark over Chelsea future, claims Newton

Monday 28 May 2012

Interim Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo does not yet know what his future will be at the club despite guiding the Blues to a first ever Champions League victory, the Daily Mail has reported. Di Matteo’s assistant, Eddie Newton, has revealed that the pair have not been informed of the plans of the Chelsea hierarchy.

The contracts of Di Matteo and Newton expire on June 30, a month away, and Newton has said that while they each have Chelsea’s best interests at heart and understand the club’s decision makers do as well, they do not know what direction Chelsea will go in. Newton said: “Nobody at the club is telling us anything. We all want what’s best for for Chelsea but we have absolutely no idea what the club thinks that is.

Newton was a teammate of Di Matteo’s during his Chelsea playing career, serving the Stamford Bridge club as a midfielder between 1990 and 1999, making more than 150 appearances in the process. Newton won the FA Cup in 1997 and the League Cup and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1998 while wearing Chelsea colours.
