Wednesday 30 May 2012

Former Wigan Athletic midfielder Mohamed Diame was ready to join Liverpool on a free transfer before Kenny Dalglish was sacked, the Liverpool Echo has reported.

Diame has left the DW Stadium after his contract expired and terms on a new one were not agreed, with Liverpool said to be ready to move for the Senegal international before the club was thrown into disarray by the abrupt end of Dalglish’s tenure.

The 24-year-old added that while he is aware of interest in his signature from Spain, France and Turkey, his preference would be to remain in England. Diame also admitted he was disappointed his move to Anfield did not come to fruition, revealing that he is now likely to go elsewhere.

Diame moved to Wigan from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano in 2009, having first played in the country with Linares after leaving French side Lens in 2007 without making a first team appearance. Diame did play for Lens’ B team but it was at Rayo when he came to prominence, Wigan eventually bringing him to the Premier League. Diame made over 100 appearances for the Latics.
