Rodgers Liverpool link persists but Anfield situation remains unclear

The name of Swansea City manager Brendan Rodgers is still being mentioned in connection with the vacant Liverpool manager’s position, despite the Welsh side insisting they have not received a second approach from the Anfield club for the Northern Irishman, Press Association has reported.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez was the favourite for the post and was even pictured meeting with Liverpool owner John W. Henry in the United States, but Rodgers’ name resurfaced in connection with the role, and the 39-year-old’s return from the United States to meet with Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins this week only powered the rumour mill further.

However, PA reports that Jenkins and Rodgers did not discuss the Liverpool situation, instead talking only about possible transfer targets, while the meeting was set long before Liverpool were said to be preparing a second approach for the former Reading manager. Rodgers has already turned down the chance to speak to Liverpool.

I keep waiting for the real candidates to be approached for the greatest job in football. What have we got so far? Roberto Martinez; who has struggled for years to keep his team in the Premier Division Brendan Rodgers; has done ok for his first season in the EPL but is basically a Gaelic Athletic Football player AVB; who failed to invigorate the sleeping Chelsea and got the sack All of these it would seem will be directed by Louis Van Gall - a time expired Holland manager who caused a stir because he wanted the managers job and was sacked (in Holland) If this is the best you can do Mr Henry the Scousers will be on your back from day one. - A gross insult to Kenny. Can I advise you because the others have failed. Hire Steve Gerrard as player manager to be assisted by Jamie Carragher and Steve Wilson. We will know you are serious if you do!
