Baines flattered by Man Utd link but admits love for Everton

Everton and England full-back Leighton Baines has admitted he is flattered to be the subject of transfer attention from Manchester United, but stressed that he cares greatly about his current club, the North Wales Daily Post has reported.

Baines is said to be near the top of Sir Alex Ferguson’s summer transfer window wish list to provide competition for and eventually replace Patrice Evra, who has also been linked with a move away from the club, the newspaper adds.

Everton would not be receptive to an offer for their left-back and a multi-time Player of the Year award winner, particularly not as United’s reputed opening offer of £12m falls someway short of the club’s valuation of Baines. The Daily Post puts the first figure Everton would even consider at £15m.

Baines did not outright rejection the suggestion that he could be a United player next season, but insisted he was not looking to leave Goodison Park and would prefer to focus on his England duties ahead of Euro 2012.

The former Wigan Athletic defender said: “The United link is flattering. There is no harm in people talking about it because it is a great club. But I’m at a great club as well, a club that I love. The focus now is on the tournament. There’s not much time to let other things seep in.
