Chelsea captain Terry banned for two games after Champions League red card
Chelsea will begin the defence of their Champions League trophy next season without captain John Terry, who has been banned for a further two games for his red card in last season’s semi-final against Barcelona, the BBC has reported.
Terry missed the final against Bayern Munich through suspension but UEFA have confirmed the England international will be unavailable for two more matches. Terry and Chelsea have three days in which to decide whether or not to lodge an appeal. The centre-back was sent off for violent conduct after appearing to strike Alexis Sanchez in the back with his knee.
If Terry does not appeal or the appeal is rejected the 31-year-old will miss the European Super Cup fixture against Atletico Madrid at the end of August, as well as the first round of the group stage. Despite being without their captain and a number of other players, including Branislav Ivanovic, Ramires and Raul Meireles, Chelsea dispatched Bayern on penalties after the match was drawn 1-1.
