Mourinho backs Rodgers to succeed at Liverpool

Friday 01 June 2012

New Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has received the backing of one of his mentors in football, former Chelsea boss and current Real Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho, whom Rodgers worked under at Stamford Bridge, the BBC has reported.

When Mourinho was Chelsea manager Rodgers was a coach in the youth set-up, appointed by the Portuguese to the position of youth team manager in 2004 and then promoted to reserve team manager in 2006. Rodgers left Chelsea to take over the managerial role at Watford in 2008, with Mourinho having departed the club a year earlier.

Rodgers originally declined to speak with Liverpool about the opportunity to replace Kenny Dalglish at Anfield, but after Liverpool turned their attention elsewhere Rodgers’ mind changed and he met with the Swansea chairman, Huw Jenkins, to confirm he wanted to take up the post on Merseyside.

Mourinho feels Rodgers has the right skills needed to succeed in such a high-pressure environment. He said: “Brendan is a good man, a family guy and a friend. When he joined us at Chelsea he was a young coach with lots of desire to learn. But he was also a coach with ideas, who was ready not just to listen but also to communicate and share.
