Liverpool walk away from new stadium in favour of redeveloped Anfield
Liverpool may have a new manager in former Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers but the Guardian reports they will not have a new stadium, as plans from Liverpool City Council show an expanded Anfield is now on the agenda.
Increasing the capacity of the existing stadium would be done by redeveloping the main stand, a process that would mean the demolition of a number of houses in the surrounding streets. The residents would receive “full market valuation” for their homes, as well as a 10% “home loss payment” and removal costs, the Guardian quoted a council official as saying. Compulsory purchase orders could be enacted to drive through the procedure.
The plans were presented to residents at a meeting in mid-May. The houses the club and council would seek to demolish are all on Lothair Road, the street the main stand is on, while two further options involve not only two lots of terraced houses on Lothair Road but also a second street, Alory.
Liverpool had previously been thought to favour the notion of a brand new stadium in Liverpool’s Stanley Park, the grassland that separates Anfield from Goodison Park, the home of Everton.
