Holland strikers unsure of Euro 2012 starting places

Friday 01 June 2012

Confusion appears to be rife in the Netherlands side ahead of Euro 2012, with both Robin van Persie and Klaas-Jan Hunterlaar unsure if they are set for a starting place in Bert van Marwijk’s team.

The Oranje face Northern Ireland on Saturday night, in their last friendly international before they kick-off their Euro 2012 campaign against Denmark next Saturday, and all eyes will be on the starting strikers for a clue into van Marwijk’s thinking.

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, who has netted 30 goals in 38 league games this season, is a slight favourite, but revealed to OnsOranje that the place is far from won:

“I do not know if I am the number one striker, I really do not know. Nobody knows that yet. Van Marwijk will go for a striker who works well with the midfield, but that can also be Klaas.”

If van Persie does get the nod, it will be at the expense of Hunterlaar, another striker in top form, having scored 29 in 32 for Schalke in the Bundesliga this year. Yesterday, he revealed his worries to De Telegraaf:

“I can't do any better than last season, I always train hard and I have a positive attitude. There's a chance that you become despondent if you still don't get a chance. I don't know what I have to do to become Oranje's first-choice striker to be honest.”

Holland enjoyed a 2-0 victory at home to Slovakia on Wednesday, with van Persie playing 68 minutes. The goals came from an own goal by Kornel Saláta, and one for substitute Rafael van der Vaart.
