Romeu dismisses talk of Chelsea exit

Sunday 03 June 2012

Chelsea midfielder Oriol Romeu has dismissed the suggestion that he could be leaving the club this summer, and told Goal.com that he will stay and fight for his place next season.

Romeu struggled to make first team appearances in Chelsea’s Champions League winning season, making 11 starts in the league in his first season with the club since signing from Barcelona for €5m, facing competition for a defensive midfield role with John Obi Mikel and Michael Essien among others. The Spain under-21 international has revealed that he intends to improve upon that next season:

“I have a contract, and my dream is to play. I demonstrated to myself that I could play early in the season, and I think I'm able. Hopefully next season I will enjoy more minutes on the pitch.

"For me, the season at Chelsea has been spectacular, especially the achievement of winning the Champions League. It's something I always dreamed of as a child."

Midway through the season there were reports that the 20-year-old was keen on a return to the Camp Nou, where Barcelona have the furst option on a possible buy-back, but it appears the speculation over such a move will be reduced with this announcement.

Romeu did make three Champions League appearances in the successful run, under previous manager Andre Villas-Boas, all coming in the Group stages.
