Monday 04 June 2012

Republic of Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni has confirmed his stating XI for the country’s first Euro 2012 fixture, despite the match against Croatia not taking place for nearly a week, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

The Italian announced that the team selected to play in the final pre-tournament friendly against Hungary on Monday evening would, injuries permitting, be the same side to start the tournament. There had been injury doubts over goalkeeper Shay Given and defender John O’Shea, but the experienced Premier League pair have declared themselves fit to play in the friendly and therefore, the opening match of the competition itself.

Trapattoni added that O’Shea does not need to play the whole game, just 70 minutes, to prove his fitness, as the manager is already looking past the friendly to the meeting with Slaven Bilic’s side. Ireland will also face Italy and World and European champions Spain as part of Group C.
