Chelsea to talk with council over Stamford Bridge
After seeing their bid for Battersea Power Station lose out to a Malaysian consortium, Chelsea are now discussing with their local council in a bid to expand Stamford Bridge, The Guardian reports.
Chelsea have played at Stamford Bridge since 1905, but with the stadium only hosting a capacity of just under 42,000, owner Roman Abramovich wants a bigger crowd to compete with their European rivals on an attendance scale. The Blues had hoped that they would have been able to land Battersea Power Station, but were beaten by property developers from the Asian country in a £400m deal.
Now, representatives from Hammersmith & Fulham Council are expected to meet with Chelsea executives to try and work out a way to expand Stamford Bridge. Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said last month that the preferred option was to expand on their current ground. Hammersmith & Fulham council leader Nicholas Botterill insists that they are ready to discuss an upgrade and are committed to working with the club.
Botterill said: “The council remains committed to working with the club to explore all possible avenues for keeping the Blues here at their original home. The door is open and the council is again ready to sit down and discuss how Stamford Bridge can be appropriately upgraded.”
