Arsenal hone in on Giroud signing

By Andrew Tuft

Tuesday 12 June 2012

Arsenal will soon complete the signing of Montpellier’s France international striker Olivier Giroud, a move the Daily Mail believes will cast further doubt on the future of Gunners captain Robin van Persie.

Giroud scored 25 goals last season as Montpellier pulled off a shock Ligue 1 title victory, dethroning champions Lille and outlasting the petrodollars of Paris Saint-Germain, who finished third and second respectively. The Mail claim Giroud is valued at around £13m by his club.

The Mail add, however, that the possible presence of Giroud, combined with the already-confirmed signing of Germany international Lukas Podolski, suggests Arsene Wenger is fashioning a new-look strike force, one without van Persie. The newspaper says Giroud’s goal-poaching qualities and his left-footed preference hint at life without the Arsenal captain.

Van Persie has been in talks with Arsenal over extending his contract which is due to expire next summer. But without an announcement over a new deal forthcoming, clubs such as Manchester City and Juventus are said to be preparing moves for the striker.
