Redknapp leaves Tottenham
Harry Redknapp has left his position at Tottenham Hotspur, the club has confirmed, after effectively being sacked by chairman Daniel Levy and the board, the BBC
has reported.
Redknapp had a year remaining on his contract but negotiations were moving at a slow pace, with Levy said to be disappointed Tottenham had failed to qualify for the Champions League last season after a run of poor results that allowed Arsenal to overtake Spurs in third. Tottenham ended the season fourth, usually enough to enter the play-off stage of the Champions League, but Chelsea’s victory in the competition outright meant they received the final place in the tournament for next season awarded to English football. Spurs were then left with Europa League participation.
It was suggested that Tottenham’s decline came as a result of Redknapp’s name being mentioned in connection with the vacant England manager’s post, as the former Portsmouth boss was the favourite to replace Fabio Capello following the Italian’s resignation in February. Redknapp always denied this but admitted recently he would have taken the job, which went to Roy Hodgson, the Football Association’s first-choice, if it had been offered.
Levy said in a statement: “This is not a decision the board and I have taken lightly. Harry arrived at the club at a time when his experience and approach was exactly what was needed.
“This decision in no way detracts from the excellent work Harry has done during his time with the club and I should like to thank him for his achievements and contribution. Harry will always be welcome at the Lane.”
