Hamann impressed by Holland's response to criticism

Friday 15 June 2012

Dietmar Hamman has insisted that Holland are still a great side, despite their lack of form at Euro 2012, and they have great players who can challenge for big international honours.

The Oranje have lost their opening two games in Ukraine and are relying on other people’s results to help their slim chances of qualification. There has been inter-squad disputes and criticisms which have followed on from their World Cup 2010 final against Spain and the expectation heaped on the players seems to have worked negatively.

Hamann played 59 games for Germany, the team top of Holland’s Euros group, and saw his country inflict the second defeat on Holland on Wednesday night in Kharkiv. The 38 year old believes that the quality of the Dutch side is evident for all to see and their response from the World Cup criticism has been great, which will stand them in good stead for the future.

“I think they responded well, because sometimes when you lose a big final, you can get a bit of a dip, but they qualified convincingly. They’ve got Robin van Persie: a stand out player in Europe this year. Nigel de Jong will also have got a big lift winning the Premier League title and Van Bommel is an experienced player, so they’ve got a very strong midfield and a very physical team”, Hamann said.
