Despite reports at the beginning of the weekend stating that Brendan Rodgers was holding back on transfer talks with Gylfi Sigurdsson due to Swansea’s approaches, it appears as though Liverpool have opened discussion with the midfielder and his club, according to the BBC.

It looks as though the 22-year-old will be available for a similar amount that Hoffenheim and Swansea had agreed at the end of the season, a fee in the region of £6.8 million. But that deal stalled when Rodgers was hired by Liverpool.

The Icelander’s national team coach, Lars Lagerback, has said that Sigurdsson will be a hit at Anfield and Liverpool should do all they can to sign him, especially to link back up with manager Brendan Rodgers. He said:

“Gylfi had a fantastic season with Swansea and he has great quality. I was really impressed with what he did with Swansea and the way they played really suited him” adding “If he has some good players around him, then I think he’s an absolutely top player – but he does need to be surrounded by quality”.

Sigurdsson did have a great second half of the season playing in the Premier League, he found the net 7 times in 18 appearance for the Welsh club. He has 9 caps for his country, scoring once. The midfielder also played for Rodgers in a short spell together at Reading in the 2008-09 season.
