Laudrup facing frugal Swansea

Bookmark and Share

By Andrew Tuft

Monday 18 June 2012

New Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup will not have a small fortune to work with at the Liberty Stadium, as the BBC reports the former Denmark international will have to work under the same constraints as Brendan Rodgers, the man he replaced.

Swansea received around £5m in compensation from Liverpool for Rodgers and performed above expectations in their first Premier League campaign last season, but the club’s chairman, Huw Jenkins, insists any signings Laudrup wishes to make will have to be agreed upon by the board.

Jenkins said: “There will be no money handed to Michael Laudrup. Every player we bring into this club will be discussed and agreed between ourselves. If we feel it's right for us then we'll make every attempt as always to make sure that we bring in and spend whatever the manager sees fit.

Swansea were in the hunt for Gylfi Sigurdsson, the Iceland midfielder who moved to the club on loan from Hoffenheim in January, but Sigurdsson is now expected to follow Rodgers to Anfield. A fee of just under £7m had been agreed for the 22-year-old and Jenkins added that the club are now looking at other potential signings, stressing the need for any new arrival to buy into the way in which Swansea approach the game.
