Tottenham’s Modric wanted by Real Madrid

Monday 18 June 2012

The Daily Mail has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur’s Croatia international midfielder Luka Modric is close to a move to La Liga champions Real Madrid, after comments from Modric’s former international teammate Mate Bilic.

Bilic, who has seven Croatia caps to his name, has said Modric not only wants to leave the Premier League to experience life in Spain, but that the playmaker is not far from sealing a move away from White Hart Lane and to the Santiago Bernabeu. Bilic, who the Mail adds is close friends with Modric, said: “He wants to play in the Spanish league. He loves the Premier League but he wants to play in Spain. He’s very close to agreeing a move.

Jose Mourinho, the Madrid Coach, is thought to be a long-term admirer of Modric. The Mail continues that Mourinho sees Modric forming a midfield axis with ex-Liverpool player Xabi Alonso, with Mourinho targeting Modric as vital if Madrid are to win the Champions League under the tutelage of the Portuguese. Manchester United and Chelsea have previously been linked with the 26-year-old Modric.
