Low has to find the right balance for Germany, Hamann believes

Monday 18 June 2012

Former Germany international Dietmar Hamann believes that current national team coach Joachim Low needs to find the right mix between defence and offence at Euro 2012.

Low’s side are through to the quarter-finals after a dominant tournament so far and will face Greece, looking to continue on in their pursuit of a first international trophy since Euro 96. The German side has seen a redevelopment under Low and has changed from the efficient side Hamann played in to a team full of flair and trickery. Hamann insists that the introduction of flair players is a brilliant thing, but Low’s biggest task is to make sure the defending is still resolute.

Hamann said: “I think that is probably his (Low’s) biggest task to find a balanced team, because these days you need to have the right mix between defence and offence. Most of them are flair players which we haven’t had in the past 15 years. We’ve got Gotze, Ozil, Schweinsteiger and Kroos, four players that all like to go forward and create things”.

The 38 year old has praised the impact Bastian Schweinsteiger has on the team and the Bayern Munich midfielder will be the standout in the knockout stages. Nicknamed ‘The Brain’ by Low, Schewinsteiger has returned from injury and Hamann believes he has to be a major star or else Germany will not win the Euro 2012 trophy.
