Man City want Liverpool defender Skrtel

Thursday 21 June 2012

Premier League champions Manchester City are considering a move for Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel in an attempt to boost their chances of retaining the title next season, the Liverpool Daily Post has reported.

The Daily Post adds that City manager Roberto Mancini is understood to be a great admirer of Skrtel, who was voted Liverpool’s player of the year for his performances last season. Skrtel, who has two years remaining on his contract, recently postponed talks over an extension after the sacking of Kenny Dalglish in early May, with discussions not set to resume until the start of pre-season training in July.

City are said to be keen to sign a central defender this summer but will not pay the £45m asking price of Mancini’s first-choice target, Milan centre-back Thiago Silva. Even with Skrtel’s uncertain contractual future it is thought he would cost around half that amount, and could be tempted by the Champions League football on offer at City.
