Bale looking forward to Tottenham opener against Newcastle

Thursday 21 June 2012

Gareth Bale is pleased that Tottenham will start their season with a tough fixture away at Newcastle, who finished fifth behind Spurs last year. Speaking to the club’s website the Welshman suggested that playing against a top four candidate is a good test for the opening game of a new season.

He said: “It will be difficult, especially away from home, but it's a good early test for us. It’s important to get off to a good start,” adding: “Newcastle had a fine season. No-one really expected them be right up there and maintain it throughout the season. They’ve some great players and it will be a case of keeping those players quiet and trying to impose our game plan.”

When the two sides met last year at St James’ Park in October the game ended in a 2-2 draw after a late Aaron Lennon strike. In the reverse fixture in February, Tottenham stormed to a 5-0 victory.

Bale talking about the new season is a good sign for Spurs fans. The left sided player has been strongly linked with a move away from the club after the departure of Harry Redknapp, with the likes of Barcelona and Manchester United speculated to be monitoring the situation.

Another fixture that Bale will no doubt be looking forward to is against his old club Southampton. Tottenham signed the 22-year-old from St Mary’s in 2007.
