Chelsea join race for Debuchy

Friday 22 June 2012

Chelsea are ready to do battle with Newcastle over Frenchman Mathieu Debuchy.

According to the Northern Echo, the European Champions are looking for a new right-back after the departure of Jose Boswinga earlier this month and new manager Roberto Di Matteo has the Lille star at the top of his list.

The Magpies did have a £4 million bid for Debuchy turned down earlier this month, with the Ligue 1 side feeling that the Geordies were ‘having a joke’ with such a low bid. Now this new interest from Chelsea could spell the end of any potential move for the Tyneside club.

Debuchy is currently on internationally duty with France at Euro 2012, having played in all their games so far. He is an attacking minded defender, similar to the likes of Ashley Cole and Jose Boswinga, the kind of full backs Chelsea are used to.

The 28-year-old debuted for Lille at the tender age of 18 and has gone on to play 218 games for the club, scoring 15 goals in that time.
