Newcastle miss out on Alderweireld

Tuesday 26 June 2012

Newcastle United’s hopes of signing Ajax centre-back Toby Alderweireld appear to be at an end after the player confirmed he would remain with his current club this summer, ESPN has reported.

ESPN notes that it had been reported Magpies manager Alan Pardew had made Alderweireld one of his targets for the summer after the 23-year-old impressed alongside Jan Vertonghen, the Ajax captain who is said to be bound for Tottenham Hotspur.

Alderweireld has however insisted there is nothing to the speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League, adding that he fully expects to remain in Amsterdam for the foreseeable future. He said: “I will stay at Ajax, no matter what. Don't listen to all the rumours you hear.

The Belgium international has been at Ajax since 2004, when he joined as a youth player from Germinal Beerschot in his home country. Alderweireld made his senior debut for Ajax in January 2009, going on to establish himself in the side following the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Arsenal.
