Man Utd to play Barcelona in pre-season tour

Friday 29 June 2012

Manchester United and Barcelona will face each other in a friendly match in Gothenburg this coming August.

The BBC have reported that the two sides – who both finished runners up in their respective leagues – will play each other for the second pre-season in a row as part of Manchester United’s world tour.

The two sides have met a number of times of the last five years, specifically in two Champions League finals that saw Barcelona run out winners on both occasions. But in last year’s friendly, the Premier League side took the spoils 2-1 in Washington D.C.

The Red Devil’s Chief Executive, David Gill, has said on the fixture: “Manchester United against Barcelona is one of the top fixtures in world football and we are delighted to work with GotEvent to this match to the beautiful cit of Gothenburg.”

The match will be the first time Tito Vilanova, the new Barcelona manager, will have faced an English club as manager of the Catalan giants. The last time the La Liga club faced a side from England was their Champions League semi-final against Chelsea, which they lost – but this time there is considerably less on the table.
