Chelsea favourites to sign Tottenham’s Modric
Chelsea will beat Real Madrid to the signing of Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Modric with an offer close to £40m, according to the Daily Express, while the owner of the Champions League winners, Roman Abramovich, views the Croatia international as a long-term replacement for Frank Lampard.
The Express adds that while Modric had appeared to favour a move to Madrid that transfer has collapsed after the Spanish club were only able to offer around £20m for the 26-year-old. Chelsea are willing to pay £36m for the services of Modric, with the newspaper claiming Spurs are in need of the extra cash to finance their own summer spending after missing out on the Champions League.
As noted, the Express claims Abramovich sees Modric as an eventual replacement for Lampard, who, at 34, is eight years older than his potential new teammate. Last season Lampard played 49 games and scored 16 goals while Modric played slightly fewer games, 40, and scored far fewer goals, five.
