Chelsea favourites to sign Tottenham’s Modric

Bookmark and Share

By Andrew Tuft

Saturday 30 June 2012

Chelsea will beat Real Madrid to the signing of Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Modric with an offer close to £40m, according to the Daily Express, while the owner of the Champions League winners, Roman Abramovich, views the Croatia international as a long-term replacement for Frank Lampard.

The Express adds that while Modric had appeared to favour a move to Madrid that transfer has collapsed after the Spanish club were only able to offer around £20m for the 26-year-old. Chelsea are willing to pay £36m for the services of Modric, with the newspaper claiming Spurs are in need of the extra cash to finance their own summer spending after missing out on the Champions League.

As noted, the Express claims Abramovich sees Modric as an eventual replacement for Lampard, who, at 34, is eight years older than his potential new teammate. Last season Lampard played 49 games and scored 16 goals while Modric played slightly fewer games, 40, and scored far fewer goals, five.

A replacement for Lampard. One is a box to box midfielder who often gets a double digit goal return every season. The other is a playmaker who has scored in 4 years what Lampard scores in one!!! £35m and Sturridge and he can go the little rat

By Daz on 04 July 2012 at 15:59

Pay 45M and you can take the little rat.

To me Lampard has played and have win enough Trophies at Chelsea so its time to go and let young/fresh players come in to help the club...... If i where to to Lampard, i'l go like Drogba just did honourably to GALAXY and get/make his cool money......

I wil like chelsea to sign luka modric from tottenham and if chelsea can sign him i wil be very glad. What a formation and how could chelsea lineup be next season with modric.

By spud pants on 01 July 2012 at 23:01

spuds can shove modric into their backsides.sure chelsea needs modric but hey they won champions league and FA cup without him.and they can do it without him next season.we hope you'll do well with modric again so that you can win something next time...at least something, so that when you say spuds are bigger than chelsea, then someone will believe you.

Whinge all you like chivers. There were convictions for indecent chanting. Plus i don't think a plea of not guilty is a plea bargain either. Look it up, the facts are in the public domain. Instead of accusing me of using it as a weapon, why don't you just admit your fans are capable of obscene and indecent chanting, which the type of thing they sometimes accuse others of doing. Your burying your head in the sand routine aint working.

By Godswill on 01 July 2012 at 09:30

Please Roman give us Modric. it will be a fantastic signing for chelsea fc

By david 'el muro' luiz on 01 July 2012 at 05:43

Typical spuds. I don't even want modric, all spud players are average players. They like the kick and run.lennon and bale. Lampard at 34 made 49 app last season and scored 16 goals..modric only 5. He isn't even. A direct assister, he only brings flair. We've got winners like josh,de bruyne,mata,piazon,davila,hazard..ooops now I knw why u are all mad, u tought hazard was coming to that hell hole? Sorry he loves to win. And avb even talking abt danny..tell you what modric +10mill for danny. Overated spuds.

By timmy on 30 June 2012 at 23:27

Luis nani is a better option to modric,I read that man utd is reluctant to extend his contract and I strongly believe if tempted he will leave,Nani offers variety of options and will be an added advantage if brought on

By Jyd on 30 June 2012 at 23:20

Let b candid here, spurs are thinkin wt their head reciprocal, put urself in modric's shoe,y ll sumone prevent u 4rm doing ur wish? Ask urself this question levy's children

By Peter Hill Alufa on 30 June 2012 at 23:14

Blues pls buy hulk, modrik. Rafeal and macon. Pls

By usman gama on 30 June 2012 at 22:05

i want chelsea to sign modric, maicom, and one forward

By Monilola on 30 June 2012 at 21:03

Chelsea should try all their to sign modric

By chivers on 30 June 2012 at 20:47

no luka, you should very much check your 'facts', the only convictions were actually in effect 'plea bargains' those convicted accepted the charges to avoid being dragged through the courts. one man refused to do so as he said he, the others were innocent, the song was NOT intended to be homophobic. football supporters should unite against this kind of victimisation, not use it as a weapon against each other.

By joseph moonga on 30 June 2012 at 20:19

Modric, we welcome to the champion of europe.I promise you that you'll never go wrong if you join chelseafc.

By enan shams on 30 June 2012 at 17:47

i think Toni Kroos is much better option .... he can serve us more then 8 years.. he will take the place of Ballack in German national team ... so think about it .... :)

By Naakman on 30 June 2012 at 16:59

Chelseafc is the only pride of London. All Londoners(spud fans) sud hold on fast 2 dowin evr tin possible 2 becomin part of the only blue family. And as 4 Modric, his already hapi dat his been linked 2 the Roman army. Blue is colour.

By Oluwande paulson on 30 June 2012 at 16:15

Pls I dont think we still need modrick we need a player that can play as a striker, suporting or winger with power a player like hulk pls

By eddy on 30 June 2012 at 16:12

to the guy who said ENGLISH players last long D'ont forget foreign players made premier league great and best in the world just look at England they c'ant even do more then two passes,,,,,,,

By sufd on 30 June 2012 at 16:01

chelsea already have lot of players in that position.. what will do josh?

By jayse on 30 June 2012 at 14:05

This is going to be another mistake. Just like Fernando we're trying to buy a player whose recent stats show no sign of hope but somehow we think they will be better at Chelsea. BIG MISTAKE. Besides if you're looking for a long-term replacement for Lampard it has to be an English guy cos they stay long [lampard, scholes, gerrard, giggs]. You should never trust a foreign based player cos they can easily get homesick!

By Luka on 30 June 2012 at 13:29

Well chivers, it wasn't "successfully disputed" by the ones that were convicted. You need to check your facts.

By jamie on 30 June 2012 at 13:15

@ Jay Its called investing you your team. Things have changed in foot ball and spurs need to keep up. Look at real madrid, how much did they pay for C Ronaldo again??? These things happen. Spurs is splashing some cash also , its just they aint got the splashing power chelsea has. Clubs like chelsea and man city have brought a lot to the PL. Because of their investments, that have change the fate of things. no longer is there a top 2 but now a top 4 contenders that equally can win the PL. No longer is it a high chance for manchester united to win or for arsenal to be in the top. Look at the last day in the PL, most exciting ever. This is what investments have brought and for that we should be appreciative. Im sure if mr levy opened his pockets, you lot would be singing a different tune. These are new times in foot ball and unless spurs keeps up , they will lose out. Plus... modric would be an amazing signing for chelsea yaaaay if we get him :)

By jamie on 30 June 2012 at 13:05

so spurs gets the manager that messed withs up for chelsea and got rid of the manager who mad it all happen for you and you really with we will be 7th? interesting... chelsea will have a stronger defence and an improved offence with will work better as a team and wont just need to depend on drogs. we will have more options up front and a lot more pace. You seriously think chelsea will be 7th? I guess there is no reasoning with some people. Im an sorry if we hurt you so deep by achieving our dream. Just remember, we won the CL, we went against all odds, I think it would be wise if you learn from this and not doubt chelsea. We are a stronger team now and improving with the signings. solving our weakness and improving our strengths. so is anything or chances have improved but again, when some one is bitting, its hard to reason with them so again, I am sorry that we crushed your dreams by winning ours. How do they say it again ... Dont hate :)

By Daniel on 30 June 2012 at 13:02

I think lucas modric is going to b a gud sign 4 chelsea, that's if they can met up to tottenham demand.

By Jay on 30 June 2012 at 12:56

No Jamie, you BUY trophys! Your success is romans deep pockets. Without his money where would you be? You'd have won f#ck all that's where! As for spurs we fell away because of poor tactics and the fact our manager was linked and unsettled by every media source linking him to and England job and the idiot let it get to his head. That was the reason we fell away. We didn't run out of luck, you have to have luck to run out of it and if you look at the facts we had more decisions that should have gone for us, go against us than any other team! Go glory hunt as roman buys you another trophy! Us spurs fans are real fans, stick with our club through the good and bad and still sell out our games and have over 25,000 on a season ticket waiting list..we don't have to advertise our tickets on radio stations because we can't fill our ground even with the plastic glory hunter fans chelsea have since roman bought there status and success. Small team with lots of money that's what chelsea are..chelsea are romans pockets!! Waaaa!

By Peter4Spurs on 30 June 2012 at 12:55

Alberto - is that the same Modric saga like last year when Spurs bowed down and sold u Modric coz what the Ruskie wants the Ruski gets ... ohhh wait ... He still plays for Spurs, that must mean ... we don't bow down to you ... Jamie, one win does not make a season, you still have to do it all again and without Drogba that won't happen - he wont it for you, Torres wont and your manager could only park the bus to win it, them tactics wont work again ... it's 7th for you this year ... Chelski, the 'NEW' Liverpool has been's.

By jamie on 30 June 2012 at 12:46

Awww spurs babies still crying. Here have a napkin. Chelsea are champions. Yes we finished 6th but every one knows why, with that AVB drama ( your future manager). Spurs... u was 3rd place.... you was catching up to the top 2..... What happened? I mean, you didn't have manager changes or dressing room drama. I mean ... was it that you luck ran out? We are champions , we win trophies, Just suck it up and deal with it. Maybe you will win something again one day. GOOOO CHELSEAAAA

By Jay on 30 June 2012 at 12:43

Levy has already stated he won't do business with chelsea after the way they conducted themselves last summer when they went public with a failed bid and told not to. Then told not to return with bids and they kept coming back. The underlying tapping up of modric was evident and even now Ivanavic has started the same dirty tactics and this is why Levy won't sell to chelsea. Expect luka to go to either utd/city or abroad to madrid.

By alberto on 30 June 2012 at 12:22

My oh my,what a bunch of bitter and arrogant spurs fans. There is a real world out there.Modric wants to go to the champions league winners and you all know that there is nothing you can do to prevent it.Roman wants him and modric wants trophies in his back pocket.Get out of denial and put yourself in his boots. What would you do if you were modric.

By chivers on 30 June 2012 at 12:05

'everything i wrote is true' on planet media maybe, spurs fans are not homophobic, that claim was a police/media fiction and was succesfully disputed, please check hour 'facts' before libelling people

By Peter4Spurs on 30 June 2012 at 11:47

What a load of rubbish - you should get out of the clouds, ) Modric has not asked for a transfer 2) Spurs are NOT short of cash 3) Levy will NOT sell to another Prem Club ... 4) Modric will be forced to stay unless the new manager does not want him and that will include sitting on the bench until he realises who pays his wages ... He still has 4 year left on his contract ... we don't have to sell. 5) papers have long been in the pay of other so called big clubs and have always tried to sell our player with lies - don't believe all you read - after all They all said Bale was leaving - Dah, the man who just penned a new deal!!!

By Luka on 30 June 2012 at 11:40

Everything i wrote is correct Mark. Homophobic fans slating Sol Campbell, racist fans slating Adebayor until he signed for you, fans running on to the pitch attacking players, and the only Premier League club where away fans are advised not to wear colours. Chav central awaiting riots. And as for assuming i'm a Chelsea fan, well i'm not. Reading fan, and one who knows the truth about the spuds location from first hand experience.

By nwonu philip on 30 June 2012 at 11:28

Chelsea need luka modric seriously so that chelsea will get a better pattern amongest other club in world.

By Mark on 30 June 2012 at 11:24

Occasionally I can be bothered to respond from a position of knowing (you will have to trust me). There is more chance of Modric going to Scunthorpe than Chelsea. If there are any Chelsea 'fans' on here - forget signing Modric - I know the intelligent Chelsea fans know this already. As for 'Luka' who has posted on here. You are a sad and pathetic little person. You may think your comment is funny, but it is just totally immature. The people of Tottenham and the Football Club are working incredibly hard in the community and while their are ignorant idiots like you around it makes it a little harder. You have chose to 'support' a team from a very wealthy part of London. Some of us were born in the 'slum' as you call it, but we continue to work tirelessly to help our community. What do you do?

By sam emi on 30 June 2012 at 11:05

Get him real fast! Can't wait to O???????.?O??? him play @ da bridge. my possible line-up next season...cech,cahill/luiz,ivanovic/terry,debuchy/hutchison,cole/betrand,mikel/lampard,modric/ramires,hulk,hazard,mata and torres

By Luka on 30 June 2012 at 10:57

Your spot! LOL! You blew "your spot" when you thought the league ended in December. The tiny tots bottled it big time again!

By Lightning Smith on 30 June 2012 at 10:51

A couple of questions. Why would Modric leave a better team, to join a (park the bus)outfit that is hated across Europe? If he leaves it will be to Spain or Italy. Secondly. Do you really think DanielLevy would let Modric break his contract to join another EPL team?

By DVC on 30 June 2012 at 10:35

Not sure what your drinking but try going back to Lemonade. No way will Daniel sll him to Chelski, but then again maybe for £45 million. Do not be surprised to see him at the lane this season. By the way Torres is going to Brighton, Terry is going to Aldershot. You heard it here first .....................

By Lee on 30 June 2012 at 10:31

Yeah favourites my arse! I tell you what pull out of CL and give us our spot back and we will give you Luka for 10mil
